Buying the right mattress

When you buy a new mattress, you’re also investing in yourself and your well-being. After all, if you’re getting the recommended eight hours of sleep every night, you’re spending about a third of your life in bed. So, how do you know when it’s time to invest in a new mattress—and how do you buy one you’ll love sleeping on for years to come?

How Long Should a Mattress Last?

If you’re making any big lifestyle changes in the near future—for instance, if you’re moving in with a partner and want to upgrade to a bigger mattress, or you’re shopping for a grown-up bed for your child—it’s obviously time to make the purchase.

If it’s been over a decade since you got a new mattress, it might be time to switch. Experts agree that mattresses should last around 10 years—sometimes even more, especially if it’s a high-quality product and you take great care of it over the years. But in general, you want your mattress to last for at least seven to eight years, preferably ten.

Types of Mattresses

Whether you’ve purchased a mattress before or this is the first time you’ve ever had to shop for one, you need to know what kinds of mattresses are on the market. These are the main types you’ll see as you shop—make your decision based on how you like your bed to feel.

Innerspring

An innerspring mattress is a mattress that’s primarily made up of metal coils, with a soft cushion around it. Over the years, these cushions have been made from anything from cotton to wool to feathers. These mattresses tend to be firmer and have some bounce to them.

Foam

These mattresses don’t have any metal coils inside, but are made entirely of layers of foam or memory foam, a synthetic material (essentially polyurethane) designed to support your body and adapt to it. Rather than rest on top of a memory foam mattress, your body will sink in a little and be cradled by the foam.

Latex

Latex is a natural material made from the sap of a rubber plant, but you can also find synthetic latex mattresses on the market. Rather than sinking in to the mattress like you would on a memory foam bed, the latex compresses and conforms to the general shape of your body while still having more bounce-back.

Hybrid

A hybrid mattress is the best of both worlds. The bottom layer of the mattress will be innerspring coils, while the top layer will be either foam or latex, depending on which material you prefer. How it feels will depend on whether you choose foam or latex.

You need sleep to help your immune system

When everything is working correctly, and your body is in an overall healthy state, the immune system can ward off sickness. But since the immune system connects to your central nervous system, changes elsewhere in the body, such as a lack of sleep or excessive stress, can impact immune function. Lack of sleep causes degenerative effects throughout the entire body, so the immune system will not work as efficiently when you are sleep deprived, making you more susceptible to illness.

Additionally, sleep affords the immune system the chance to recoup and reevaluate how best to attack invaders. Without enough rest, it will have a difficult time developing antibodies and keeping up defenses.

Sleep Increases Immune System Response Time

Ensuring that you get a good night’s sleep can also improve the immune system’s response time.

When we cycle through all four stages of sleep, each stage performs specific functions that are important for proper health. One of those functions is the production of the protein cytokine (any of a number of substances, such as interferon, interleukin, and growth factors, which are secreted by certain cells of the immune system and have an effect on other cells).

This helps the immune system respond to harmful pathogens. Cytokines increase cell to cell communication, enabling the immune system to direct antibodies towards specific infections.

If we don’t cycle through all four stages of sleep at least five times each night (7 to 8 hours of sleep), our cytokine production will be limited. Without this vital protein, the immune system doesn’t have what it needs to fight off viruses.

Sleep Increases T Cell Production

White Blood Cells also play a vital role in immune function. These cells help the immune system attack and destroy harmful cells. Research has shown that sleep can improve your T Cell’s ability to fight off invaders.

How and when should I flip or rotate my mattress?

With proper care, your mattress should provide you with comfort and support for many years.

Whilst mattresses can be expensive, getting a good night’s sleep every night is priceless. To increase your mattress’ longevity, it’s important to care for it properly. One important aspect of caring for your mattressis rotating it, a task that should be completed routinely.

Why flip or rotate a mattress?

Regularly rotating and flipping your mattress keeps it in better condition for longer, helping it to provide you with the support you need for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Over time, your mattress may sag or develop an impression in the spot where you lay. By rotating your mattress, you spread out the wear, giving the space where you sleep some time to regain its shape again.

Should I flip, rotate, or both?

Whilst you can and should rotate most mattresses, not every mattress should be flipped. Many modern mattresses are now only one-sided, so check what kind of mattress you have before you attempt to flip it!

How to rotate your mattress

Mattresses that are slept on every night should be rotated once every 3 months, whilst less frequently used mattresses, like those on guest beds, can get away with being rotated once every 6-12 months.

To rotate your mattress, begin by removing all sheets, duvets and pillows from the bed and clearing the space around your bed.  Now turn the mattress 180 degrees so the head end is now at the bottom of the bed.

How to flip a mattress

If your mattress is double-sided, you should rotate your mattress 180 degrees at the same time as flipping it over.
