Following the recent heatwave we have compiled a list of top tips on how to get the best night’s sleep possible when sharing a bed with someone.

We’ve all been there. Rolling around in sticky sheets, flipping your pillow every four minutes, desperately hoping a breeze is going to find its way through your window.

Every year, on the rare days where the temperature skirts 30 degrees, we all basically develop heatwave insomnia. And it’s even worse if you share a bed.

No amount of pillow-flipping or duvet-turning can counter the additional heat that comes from another human body – but if you don’t want to opt for separate beds (or don’t have an additional sleeping space), there are things you can try.

Here’s a few ideas for how you can sleep better in this heat.

Take a cool shower

Just before you go to bed, take a cool shower to bring your body temperature down. Your body temperature needs to drop when you go to sleep, giving it a helping hand by cooling off in a cool shower should help you get to sleep faster.

Ditch your duvet

If you are someone that needs to sleep under the covers at night opt for a straight cotton bedsheet or quilt cotton cover- and if there are two of you, have one each. This will ensure moisture wicks away from each individual and bed-sharers don’t end up sticking to each other.

Sleep alone

Sorry lovers, if the heat is really too much you may have to sleep apart.

The good news is that heat rises, so the person banished to the sofa for the sweaty evening is likely to have a cooler night’s sleep.

Drink plenty of water

It may seem like an obvious one, but drinking plenty of water is often overlooked. Cool down from the inside out by staying hydrated with plenty of liquids. It is recommended to drink between 1.5 and 2 litres per day.

Avoid Alcohol

Bad news for some, but forecasters advise against drinking alcohol in the intense heat, as well as teas and coffees, which act as diuretics and can cause dehydration.

Switch the fan on

Fans can help your body regulate its internal temperature – and sticking a pan of ice cubes in front of it can make the circulating air even cooler. If you haven’t got one handy, fill a hot water bottle with cold water instead.

Sleep on a lower floor

If your home has several floors, it might be worth sleeping downstairs.

Freeze a flannel

Sticking a washcloth in the freezer can be especially refreshing to place on your forehead as you lie in bed.

Allow the air to flow

Have a cool bath or shower before bed

Having a cool (or if you can stand it, cold) bath or shower before going to bed will encourage your core temperature to drop, meaning that you won’t be as hot before getting in to bed and will hopefully find it easier to drift off to sleep, even if it’s a warm evening.

Keep the heat out

Close blinds and curtains in rooms that are exposed to direct sunlight. The shade will help the room stay cooler. It’s important to do this early on in the day, so that when the sun is at its highest and hottest in the middle of the day, the rooms in your home stay as cool as possible.

Choose bedding in natural materials– Avoid bedding made from cheap, synthetic materials. Instead, invest in bedding made from 100% cotton or silk, these materials are softer, cooler and more breathable. Allowing air to circulate and keeping your body cooler during the night.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine before bed– Both alcohol and drinks containing caffeine can disrupt sleep, so it’s best to avoid drinking them as much as possible, particularly in the evening. Alcohol can actually cause night sweats, so drinking it before bed could also trigger a hot flush.

Keep your bedroom cool–Keep your bedroom at a cool and comfortable temperature by ensuring the heating goes off well before you head to bed. During the hotter months, keep your curtains or blinds drawn in the day to prevent the sun heating up the bedroom and open your window in the evening before bed to get some cool air circulating.

As we’re more accustomed to milder summer weather here in the UK, many of us were feeling sweaty, uncomfortable and tired after hot, restless nights tossing and turning in bed.

Very hot temperatures put us at risk of dehydration, overheating, heatstroke, and exhaustion, so it’s important to take precautions to keep cool.

Use the tips in this blog to create a comfortable sleep environment and keep cool at night to help you stay rested and refreshed during the hot weather.

  • Keep the curtains or blinds in your bedroom drawn throughout the day to keep the room cooler.
  • Drink plenty of water during the day and keep a glass of water by your bedside.
  • Avoid exercising within 3 hours of going to bed.
  • Have a cool shower or bath just before bed to lower your body temperature.

There is always an option to have no sheets on the bed at all during hot weather, but this can sometimes leave you susceptible to feeling the chill of early morning if conditions suddenly change.

The best way to cool things down therefore is to invest in cotton sheets, that are far more breathable than synthetic fabrics. Also avoid silk which can really raise the temperature.

Cooling your bed

Cool your bedsheets and pillows
