Our extra firm mattress range is suited to front and back sleepers, heavier builds, and those who need uncompromising spinal support. Browse our full range below, available in all standard UK sizes.
What Is an Extra Firm Mattress?
An extra firm mattress sits at around 9–10 out of 10 on the firmness scale (where 1 is ultra-soft and 10 is extra-firm) — the most supportive and least yielding option available. There is very little cushioning at the surface; instead, you feel the full resistance of the support core the moment you lie down. Your body stays on top of the mattress rather than sinking into it, which keeps the spine in a flat, neutral position with minimal curvature. Extra firm mattresses are sometimes labelled orthopaedic, though the term has no regulated medical definition — it simply signals the highest level of support.
Who Should Choose an Extra Firm Mattress?
- Front sleepers — An extra firm surface prevents the pelvis from dipping into the mattress, which can overarch the lower back and lead to pain or stiffness.
- Back sleepers who prefer a rigid feel — Keeps the entire length of the spine level and well-supported, with no risk of the hips sinking below the shoulders.
- Heavier sleepers (roughly over 16 stone) — Greater body weight compresses standard comfort layers more deeply; an extra firm construction provides the resistance needed to prevent bottoming out and maintain long-term support.
- Those with lower back pain linked to a sagging mattress — If your current mattress no longer supports the lumbar region, an extra firm option eliminates sag and restores alignment.
- Those who simply prefer a very hard sleep surface — Some sleepers find any degree of cushioning uncomfortable and sleep best on the most solid surface available.
Extra firm mattresses are rarely comfortable for side sleepers, as the rigid surface creates concentrated pressure at the hips and shoulders rather than allowing them to sink in. If you need strong support with some contouring, a firm or medium-firm mattress may be more suitable. If in doubt, consult a GP or physiotherapist before purchasing.
Extra Firm Mattress Types at M6 Beds
Extra Firm Pocket Sprung Mattresses
High-tension, individually encased springs deliver maximum resistance and targeted support — breathable, durable, and effective at isolating partner movement.
Extra Firm Memory Foam Mattresses
High-density foam layers provide a rigid, body-contouring surface that distributes weight evenly, offering structured support with minimal sink and reduced motion transfer.
Extra Firm Hybrid Mattresses
Combines a reinforced pocket spring core with slim, high-density foam or latex comfort layers — the airflow and durability of springs with just a thin buffer at the surface.
Extra Firm Latex Mattresses
Naturally resilient and quick to recover its shape, extra firm latex offers a solid, buoyant feel that sleeps cooler than all-foam constructions and resists lasting body impressions.

Pairing with the Right Base
Your base affects how your mattress performs — browse our full range of beds & bed frames to find the right one for your home. An extra firm mattress on a solid-top divan will feel at its most rigid, whilst a sprung slatted base introduces a subtle layer of flex beneath the mattress. On a slatted base, ensure slats are no more than 7 cm apart to prevent sagging and protect the mattress structure.
Maintenance and Lifespan
Rotate your mattress head-to-toe every three months and use a mattress protector from day one to guard against moisture and dust. Extra firm mattresses tend to hold their shape exceptionally well, with a typical lifespan of 7–10 years or more. Check individual product warranties for manufacturer guarantees.
Is an extra firm mattress good for back pain?
An extra firm mattress can help with lower back pain caused by a mattress that sags or offers too little support, as it holds the spine level and prevents the midsection from dipping. However, extra firm is not the right choice for everyone with back pain — if discomfort stems from pressure points at the hips or shoulders, a firm or medium-firm mattress with more surface cushioning may be more effective. For personalised guidance, read our guide to the best mattress type for back pain, visit our showroom, or consult a GP or physiotherapist.
What is the difference between firm and extra firm?
A firm mattress (around 7–8 out of 10) has a thin comfort layer that provides modest surface cushioning before you feel the support core. An extra firm mattress (9–10 out of 10) has minimal or no perceptible comfort layer — you feel the full resistance of the support core almost immediately.
Can side sleepers use an extra firm mattress?
It is not generally recommended. Side sleeping concentrates body weight at the hips and shoulders, which need room to sink in for proper spinal alignment. An extra firm surface resists this, often creating uncomfortable pressure points. Most side sleepers are better suited to a medium or medium-soft mattress.
Is an extra firm mattress suitable for lighter sleepers?
Lighter sleepers (roughly under 10 stone) may find an extra firm mattress uncomfortably hard, as their body weight may not be sufficient to engage even the minimal comfort layers. A firm or medium-firm mattress typically provides a better balance of support and comfort for lighter frames.
Will an extra firm mattress soften over time?
Extra firm mattresses may settle very slightly during the first few weeks as materials break in, but they are engineered to retain their rigidity long-term — particularly pocket-sprung and hybrid constructions.
Will the same mattress feel different on different bases?
Yes. The same extra firm mattress will feel at its most rigid on a solid-top divan and marginally less firm on a sprung slatted base. Wherever possible, try your mattress on the base you intend to use.
